High View

Sitting within a mature plot in the Zeals conservation area, this two-bedroom detached bungalow appeared out of place against the local Wiltshire architectural vernacular. Directly opposite stands St Martin’s Church, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, architect of St Pancras Station.

The retained building fabric will be retrofitted to integrate with the proposed on-site renewable energy generation. The ground-floor living areas are reconfigured to better connect the building to its immediate landscape. The hipped roof is removed and replaced with a lightweight timber structure featuring a steeper pitch and three gables, drawing from the local vernacular. An additional three bedrooms are accommodated within the expanded roof space.

Materials and details have been developed to reference the local context. Lime render is applied with a roughcast finish, plain clay tiles are laid with bedded verges, and the larch cladding is sourced within 20 miles of the site.
