Honiton Kitchen

Through a collaboration with Tammy Crawford-Rolt, a Devon-based joiner, we helped a couple to reconfigure their small kitchen to better suit their needs. The husband had recently been diagnosed with dementia, so it was essential that the new space was not only pleasant and functional but also incorporated elements to support his and his family’s adaptation to this new condition.

We designed a series of bespoke oak furniture pieces that kept kitchen tableware on display, aiding orientation and identification to help avoid unnecessary distress. Our research also led us to incorporate clearly identifiable and tactile elements, such as easily usable handles and taps. Glossy surfaces can cause confusion through reflections and shadows, so we opted for an eggshell-sprayed finish on the cabinets paired with a satin worktop.

The result is a simple, functional space elevated by its carefully considered objects and details.
