practice

Studio Fieldwork is an architectural practice based in Bristol that works between urban and rural design both within the South West and further afield.

We are committed to the creation of functional and resourceful buildings that are joyful and generous. We avoid excess in our work, instead focusing on more modest solutions that can have a significant and meaningful impact. Each commission, large or small, is approached with the same careful consideration and precise attention to detail.

We work with those who share the fundamental principles that underpin the work we do; a care for the landscape, the environment and the people who occupy it. Our clients range from self-builders to community groups, businesses to public bodies, private homeowners to artists. We collaborate closely with a trusted network of design specialists, builders and craftspeople to deliver our projects.

Conscious of the impact construction can have on our local and global environments, we take an economical approach to space and construction. We study local building cultures; the raw materials, techniques and knowledge that are tied to a certain area, to allow our projects to be built sustainably and efficiently with the resources at hand. We strive for an architecture that is good for people and place.

approach

People

We intend the spaces and objects that we design to be personal and reflective; almost familiar.  They should respond to the character, needs and aspirations of individuals and communities who create and inhabit them.  To fully understand these needs and aspirations, we listen, observe and build relationships with those who will experience what we design.  This allows us to develop a picture of their day to day lives and tease out the special moments that we can design for and around.

Places

We enjoy architecture most when it is rooted within its environment.  To design for a particular site, existing building or landscape, we need to read its physical and cultural environment over time so that we can begin to understand its context. To do so, we undertake fieldwork; the experience of an environment through observation and conversation. Additional studio-based research builds on these findings and gives us a more complete picture.

Materials

Choosing construction materials wisely connects a piece of architecture to its place. Since material choices also impact the local and global environment, we continually question where we can reduce the quantity of materials, whether through simply building less or building with what’s already there. We advocate the use of quality materials that are natural, locally-sourced and low in embodied carbon.  We seek to build less but better.

Making

Building cultures are closely tied to the people, places and materials unique to a place.  We are interested in tapping into these cultures to embed our work within its context.  We like to be hands-on throughout the design and build journey – reviewing, conducting physical tests and exploring the proposed construction techniques in collaboration with self-builders, consultants and makers. This crafted approach to building enables us to elevate our work.

team

Jed Baron

Jed founded Studio Fieldwork in 2021 having gained extensive experience of working on urban and rural design projects in London and Bristol.  His time spent at East architecture, landscape and urban design in London cultivated his approach to designing places for people, whilst a deeper appreciation of materials and making was fostered whilst working in the design and fabricate workshop of Shape Studio.

Jed is a founding member of the non-for-profit organisation CoB, providing a studies and talks platform for research into the culture of building in the south west of the UK.  Alongside the three other founding members of CoB, Jed is a Unit leader at Cardiff University’s Architecture School.

Connor Waters

Connor joined Studio Fieldwork in 2025, bringing with him a background in both domestic and commercial architecture projects. His experience includes working on award-winning projects at Hall + Bednarczyk Architects, notably the 2025 RSAW Award winner.

Connor’s organisational skills were honed managing complex projects whilst leading the design team at Shape Studio. He also maintains a strong interest in material craftsmanship, which he developed working on joinery projects.
